Mumbai: Massive fire broke out in the forests of Aarey Colony in the Sanjay Gandhi National Park precincts at 6.30 pm on Monday. Within an hour the Disaster Management Control Room was asked to inform all police stations surrounding the forest to be ready to evacuate tribal residents and cattle in the area, if the need arises. The fire was doused by 11 pm and no casualties were reported.
Interestingly, quite a few ‘development’ projects are planned around Mumbai’s green lungs which is home to Mumbai’s original and foremost inhabitants – Warli tribes staying there for more than 100 years. State government has been accused of treating the tribes as slum dwellers.
